Botulinum Toxin

What it is
Botulinum Toxin A is a purified protein made from the botulism bacteria. It is the most poisonous naturally occurring substance in the world. However in minute quantities, it is used to treat painful muscle spasms and as a cosmetic treatment as it decreases muscle activity. It's used to improve the appearance of frown lines and to treat severe underarm sweating. By selectively interfering with the underlying muscles' ability to contract, existing frown lines are smoothed out and, in most cases, are nearly invisible in a week.

BOTOX® is the registered trade mark for Botulinum Toxin Type A produced by Allergan, Inc.

BOTOX® is not approved in the UK for cosmetic use. However Vistabel® is approved for the treatment of glabellar lines (Vistabel®, also Allergan's product, contains the exact same formulation as BOTOX® but is supplied in smaller vials for single patient use).

Dysport® is a brand name for an alternative Botulinum Toxin produced by Ibsen.

What it involves
Use of Botulinum Toxin is a non-surgical process. Each treatment will take about 10 minutes. A few tiny injections, and within days there can be a noticeable improvement in the moderate to severe frown lines between the brows that can last up to 4 months. Results may vary. And there’s no recovery time.

Your doctor will administer several tiny injections of Botulinum Toxin directly into the muscles that cause those moderate to severe frown lines between the brows.

You may see a marked improvement in the frown lines between your brows within days. Improvement may continue for as long as a month, and could last up to 4 months.

Questions to ask
Can anyone have a Botulinum Toxin treatment ?
You should not use Botulinum Toxin if you have an infection in or around the area to be treated. And if your skin is hypersensitive it should be avoided. Patients with neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects.

Things to look out for
Be aware of the possibility of paralysis of the wrong muscle group and allergic reaction

Bruising at the site of injection is a side effect not of the toxin, but of how it has been administered.

Avoid alcohol and remain upright for several hours following the procedure.

The FDA recommends that Botulinum Toxin be injected no more frequently than once every three months, and that the lowest effective dose should be used.

Does it hurt?
Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Prior to injecting, your surgeon may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream. This will reduce any bruising.
