Breast Enlargement

What it is
Breast enlargement (augmentation) is a procedure used to increase the size and fullness of the breasts. Using a soft silicone implant, the surgeon inserts the filler under the chest tissue to simulate the natural look and feel of breast tissue. Most people will choose to go up one or two cup sizes, some will choose a more dramatic effect.

The implant can be filled with a silicone gel-type substance or saline. You can choose from a variety of shapes, sizes and textures.

What it involves
First you'll have a consultation with your surgeon to discuss the size, shape and type of implant that's right for you. You'll be measured and have the opportunity to test out different looks.

When you go for surgery, you'll be given a general anaesthetic. Then an incision is made and the breast tissue lifted to create a pocket so that the implant can be inserted underneath, either under the chest muscle or under the breast tissue.

After surgery you'll need to take it easy for a couple of days. Your breasts will be dressed with bandages and you'll have to wear a surgical bra.

Will the implants be permanent?
Most implants will need replacing after 10 - 15 years.

How long before I see the true effect of my new breasts?
Your breasts will be swollen for a few weeks after the operation and it will take time as the swelling goes down, before the size has settled down to the end result.



Things to look out for
Most people will need to repeat their procedure over the course of their lives. There are several reasons for this including cosmetic concerns, rupture or capsular conracture. This contracture is the most common complication from silicone and saline breast implants, and can be very painful and distort the appearance of the implanted breast.

You may find that the sensation around your nipple changes after surgery. It may be intense or no feeling at all. Sometimes it's temporary, but can be permanent.

If there's an extrusion of the implant through the skin, you'll need further corrective surgery to put it right.

Does it hurt?
You'll be uncomfortable after the operation. Your breasts will be dressed which will help to minimise any discomfort.

Expect them to be swollen when the dressing comes off. This is not how they'll finally look. As the swelling goes down, they'll start to look more normal.

Take things easy and don't over exert yourself.
