PROCEDURES

Thousands of men and women alike undergo liposuction every year, making it one of the most requested cosmetic surgery procedures in the world.

Finding a surgeon

You have lots of options when looking for a surgeon to perform your operation and if you do your research, talk and weigh up the pros and cons, you've every chance of finding the right one for you. Here are some tips so that you can make your choice armed with insight and information .

Going with number one?
The easy option is always going to be to go with the first surgeon you contact - but stop! Think about it! If you were buying a house, would you take the first one you saw? You're spending a lot of money and could be stuck with it for a long time. Not many people would buy the first house they view.

When choosing a surgeon, it's even more important to shop around and find the one that's right for you. A house you can sell - the effects of surgery last a whole lot longer. So start thinking straight from the outset. See at least three different surgeons, research more; get brochures; search through web sites. Then you can make comparisons and choose the one that suits your needs perfectly.

Ask around
Use referals. If you've friends you've had surgery and are happy with their surgeon, ask about him or her. And if they weren't happy take note of that too. Ask your GP if he can recommend someone. Have a look at our clinic list.

Weigh up your options
Once you've got a shortlist of two of three surgeons check their specialisms. Do they specialise in you procedure? Can you see pictures of other operations they've performed? Have a look at what they say on their web site, read through their brochures thoroughly. If you've any questions at this point phone the clinic and ask, so you have everything clear in your head before going any further.

Get up close
Arrange a consultation with your shortlisted surgeons. You will usually have to pay for your consultation. You can learn more once you're face to face. You'll get an idea of how comfortable you feel with them, ensure they counsel you appropriately about your suitability for the procedure and you can ask all of your outstanding quesitons. Don't make a decision there and then. Take all of the information you've acquired and weigh up which surgeon will be right for you.

Qualifications count
There are several recognised professional bodies it's a good idea to look for a surgeon who is a member so, if you are looking for a plastic surgeon, we recommend you contact the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons at www.baaps.org.uk

If you are looking for a dermatologist, we recommend you contact the British Association of Dermatologists at www.bad.org.uk

A question of cost
Remember cheapest is not necessarily best. Only make your decision in light of everything you've learnt. Don't let cost be the over riding factor in you decisionmaking. Once you've decided on your surgeon and you've decided to go ahead with the operation, make sure you get all the costs in writing. And if you need help financing your op. Have a look at our financing tips.
