Treatment takes up to an hour and was part of the new wave of “cosmetic treatments in your lunchtime” headlines as most people feel able to return to normal life as soon as the procedure is over.
However, if a large area is treated it can take up to two days to feel normal again and there can be a slight bleeding where the needles were inserted. There can also be mild bruising or redness that disappears in a few days.
Reasons to avoid dermal fillers are, if you have active acne or showed any reaction to the filler following a skin test. Even once the treatments have been done allergic reactions can crop up.
These include itching and redness and patients who have had cold sores can suffer an outbreak. Also, in rare occasions red lumps appear under the skin some months after treatment.
One of the “hits” of dermal filling treatments is that the results are visible immediately afterwards, unlike surgical procedures, or after the small period of the skin settling down and the redness going.
To keep the effect, repeat treatments are needed every six to nine months to maintain the effects of the first fillers.
