It is with these questions in mind, that the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) recently published guidelines for consumers, the SURE code of conduct. The launch came in response to BAAPS’ concerns that members of the public often find it difficult to navigate their way through the field of cosmetic surgery.
Adam Searle, consultant plastic surgeon and president of BAAPS, said: “We need to promote public education with regards to safety.
“Patients can still be lured in by inexpensive prices and unrealistic claims, thinking they are getting a bargain but actually putting their health at risk.”
He says a ‘lifetime of regret’ could be avoided by following the SURE steps. They are: check your Surgeon’s credentials and qualifications, Understand the procedure and its potential risks, be clear about Recovery and what the long-term implications are for any cosmetic treatment, be sure your Expectations are realistic.
