In the UK, breast enlargements are still the most popular procedure, and that seems set to continue. According to figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), its members carried out 5,655 of the procedures in 2005, a startling 51.4 per cent rise on the previous year.
Rajiv Grover says the wider use of silicon gel implants has made the operation safer. He adds: “Implant manufacturers are reporting a drop in sales of the larger Jordanesque prostheses.”

ical Associates, agrees, saying that demand will be for a more anatomical, teardrop-shaped implant, while Professor Phillip Blondeel, professor in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery at University Hospital Gent and in Switzerland, says he is seeing demand for breast implants using techniques including liposcuplture techniques, taking fat from elsewhere in the body to augment the size of the breasts by, as a rule, about a cup size.
He said: “The type of people who would want this are probably women of about 40 who have had two or three children and have some weight on their stomach. They may want abdominoplasty anyway, and this is a way of recycling the fat.”
An alternative view comes from Toledo, who works at the Gulf Speciality Hospital in Dubai, and says the size of breast implants is increasing in Brazil and the US, and he believes that is likely to travel across the Atlantic to the UK in coming years.
He says: “The shape, especially in Brazil, is rounder buttocks and larger breasts, producing an hourglass figure. It’s spreading to Europe very quickly.”
