As more women have children later in life, there will be an increase in body contouring designed to reshape the stomach and breasts following childbirth, says Grover.
He says: “As many women are now having children in their 30s rather than their 20s, we recognise that recovery from the metabolic drive to gain weight is becoming more difficult.
“This, along with rumours of younger celebrities having surgery to recover from childbirth have fuelled this trend.” However, he warns it is “never sensible” to consider such procedures within nine months of childbirth.
Similar procedures will be used following weight loss surgery, he says, pointing to forecasts that one in six of the population will be obese by 2012, sparking a rise in the use of gastric bands and other procedures to lose weight – which may have the side effect of creating loose skin around the waist and thighs.
“Procedures to remove this skin excess and contour the body will not only increase in 2007 but continue over the next few years,” says Grover.
Lucy Glancey suggests that slim people too will be turning to surgery in the wake of weight loss. She says that as women try to slim down to rival size six models, they will turn to liposculpture or fillers to make their faces look less gaunt.
