A new dental veneer called DuraTHIN promises to revolutionise dental veneers in the UK.
According to the industry body behind the new product, the BACD, DuraTHIN is a "revolutionary procedure... perfect for those who want to improve their smiles without having their natural teeth drilled down, and unlike traditional ‘no-prep’ veneers, are custom-designed and made by hand in graduated shades so they look completely natural."
The product, originally launched in the US, claims many benefits, such as the procedure is reversible, since natural teeth are left undisturbed, and in most cases the procedure can be done without numbing. Also, each DuraTHIN veneer is custom-designed to specific contours and shades and the extremely thin layer of porcelain is then bonded on top of the natural tooth. The procedure can normally be completed in two visits because teeth are not drilled down and a fake-looking ‘mock smile’ does not need to be worn for two weeks - making the entire process much less time consuming and much less painful than traditional veneers.
James Goolnik, Vice President of the BACD and the first dentist in the UK to offer DuraTHIN, states;
“Although DuraTHIN may not be suitable for every patient, it does offer a much more minimal alternative for many people desiring a less-invasive smile makeover. Also, unlike other similar procedures on the market, DuraTHIN is custom-designed to specific contours and shades, so it will result in a beautiful, more natural looking smile.”
James recently fitted 22 year old receptionist, Danielle White, who had gaps between her teeth. Danielle didn’t want the extensive time commitment involved in wearing braces, nor did she wish to have her teeth drilled down irreversibly, to be fitted with traditional veneers.
According to Danielle;
“I had always been self-conscious about the gaps in my teeth, but wasn’t willing to have my natural teeth drilled down for veneers or commit to two years of braces. When I discovered DuraTHIN I knew I had found a great alternative. Now I have the smile I’ve always wanted- but didn’t have to endure any pain, injections or drilling!”
There are other ‘prep-less’ veneers on the market, but many leave patients with unnatural, bulky looking smiles and as a result not many dentists were offering them.
