Cosmetic surgery booming in the US

Record numbers of Americans underwent cosmetic surgery in 2007, according to a new report.

The statistics, from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery,show that 11.7 million surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures were done in the U.S. in 2007, up 2% from 2006.

In 2007, as in previous years, most cosmetic procedure patients -- 91% -- were women. Although men made up a small percentage of cosmetic procedure patients, they underwent 17% more procedures in 2007 than in 2006, while the number of procedures for women only rose by 1%.

Typical patients were 35-50 years old, followed by people aged 51-64.

Here are the top five cosmetic surgery procedures in 2007

  1. Liposuction
  2. Breast augmentation
  3. Eyelid surgery
  4. Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty)
  5. Breast reduction

Here are the top five non invasivecosmetic procedures for 2007:

  1. Botox injection
  2. Hyaluronic acid (dermal fillers)
  3. Laser hair removal
  4. Microdermabrasion
