Questions to ask

Once you've identifed a surgeon, you want to be sure that they're going to be the right one for you, that they'll work with you and help you to achieve your aims. It's important that you understand what you want from your surgery, what your expectations are, the implications of your surgery and that you are truly ready for it. You need to feel confident with your surgeon and sure that they'll do the best for you.

Here are some questions you can ask that'll help you to make this decision.

What are your qualifications?
It'll help you to understand your surgeon's background and experience. And if you're looking for a specific procedure, expertise in that specific area is good.

Which professional bodies do you belong to?
Again, this will help you to identify that you have he right person for the right job and knowing that your surgeons credentials are accredited to a professional body will help your confidence in him or her.

How many times have you performed this operation before?
Ask this question and then ask to see the results.


What's your background and experience in this field?


Where else have you practised?


Have you ever had an legal action against you as a result of surgery you've undertaken?

What anaesthetisia will be used? Who's the anaesthetist? What is his/her background and experience?

What does the procedure involve?
Being forewarned is forearmed. Quite often we have a picture of what's involved and the reality is a different story. This is surgery. And you need to think very carefully about what's involved and be comfortable with it before proceeding.

Will I have to stay in hospital?
Many procedures nowadays can be done in a day. Some are major surgery, with an invasive operation and a long recovery time. You need to know how long you'll be out of action.

What are the risks of this operation? What will the follow up be if something should go wrong?

Will it hurt? What should I expect?
It most likely will. Get the answer and be prepared for all eventuality. In most cases, expect swelling and bruising.

What side effects could there be?


What will the wound be like? How long will it take to heal?


What will my limitations be post-op? How long before I can return to normal activity?

Are the effects permanent? Or will I need to have the operation again at a later date?

What results can I expect from this operation?
There's always a temptation to believe that cosmetic surgery will provide a cure-all. You need to be mentally and physically prepared for an op and temper your expectations so that they are realistic.
