More about fillers and BOTOX®

Hyaluronic acid gel treatment (NASHA™)
Restylane is derived from Q-Med’s patented Non Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid gel (NASHA™). A natural tissue friendly substance, hyaluronic acid exists naturally in our bodies It binds water and thereby hydrates the skin and keeps it fresh, firm and healthy. As we age our own hyaluronic acid becomes less efficient and our skin loses its natural elasticity and youthful volume as a result.  By boosting the skin’s natural supplies of HA with RESTYLANE, your skin will look more plumped giving a more youthful hydrated appearance and it will feel smoother too.

Restylane does not contain animal protein and therefore the inconvenience of skin tests can be avoided. The unique stabilization of the Restylane gel ensures prolonged duration of effects And reduced risk of inflammatory reactions

The Procedure
Restylane
is a soft tissue filler used for a range of different purposes and effects, from reducing the appearance of lines to enhancing facial contours and sculpting lips.

Upon being injected beneath the skin's surface, the Restylane gel adds natural volume and lift to smooth wrinkles and folds. The gel attracts and binds to water molecules to maintain volume.  Recent studies have also demonstrated that Restylane stimulates the production of collagen to produce healthy skin and improves skin elasticity.

Botulinum toxin Type A
Botulinum Toxin Type A, is a potent neurotoxin derived from bacteria, clostridium botulinum. Product names Botox and Dysport.

The procedure
Botox is injected in minute quantities. It blocks the nerve impulses to the facial muscles, responsible for contraction, thus relaxing the muscles and smoothing facial lines.  Most effective on brow lines and crows feet around the eyes.

Accurate dosing and precise positioning is critical to freeze the right muscles just enough.

Collagen treatment
Collagen is derived from the hides of cows (bovine) specially bred and then slaughtered for the purpose. Collagen can also be derived from the skin of pigs (porcine).

Because collagen is an animal product, two skin tests are needed in the forearm at least 8-10 days apart prior to treatment.

The procedure
Bovine collagen can be injected under the skin to fill lines and wrinkles and also for lip enhancement. Examples of products include Zyderm and Zyplast

Evolence is porcine collagen.

Hyaluronic acid treatment (general)
Not to be confused with Restylane and NASHA™ gel, there are other hyaluronic acid dermal fillers available.

Hylaform products are derived from combs of cockerels which are bred and then killed for the hyaluronic acid in their combs. This product was withdrawn from the UK in May 2005.

Other HA products include Hydrafill, Teosyal, Captique, Puragen and Belotero

The procedure
Used to treat lips, wrinkles and facial lines.

Takes less than an hour to do, results are immediate.

Permanent/ semi-permanent skin implants
Examples include Artecoll, Dermalive, Sculptra (New Fill), Radiesse,  Evolution, Outline, Amazingel and Softform. They contain a range of different synthetic ingredients to make the product last longer.

The procedure
These products are used to fill lines and wrinkles and augment lips by injection.

Sculptra requires at least two treatment sessions, fifteen days apart.

Evolence
A dermal filler derived from porcine collagen (pigs) with the risk of containing animal derived proteins.

The procedure
Injected under the skin to fill lines and wrinkles and also for lip enhancement.

Radiesse/Radiance
A dermal filler derived from synthetic Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) – has the same structure as the mineral found in teeth and bones.  To treat deep lines and wrinkles

The procedure
A course of one or two injections, one month apart.

Laresse
Launched in the UK in June 2006

Produced by Frizomed. Laresse is a synthetic, non-animal, non permament polymer. It is made from carboxymethylcelluose and polyethylene oxide.

The procedure
Injected under the skin to fill naso labial lines and enhance lips.

Fat injections Liposculpture (autologous fat)
The patient’s own fat cells are usually taken during liposuction from unwanted fat deposits in the hips, thighs, or abdomen.

There are many variables in this treatment, including how the fat is extracted, whether to use frozen fat or fresh fat, what area is injected, how much to use and how deeply it is injected.

The procedure
The harvested fat is injected into lines and furrows that have developed with age to recreate volume.   The treatment works well for deep folds around the mouth, deep scars and hollow cheeks.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and can take from under an hour to several hours depending on the extent of the treatment.
