What’s the procedure?
Nobel Biocare Teeth Implant
What’s your expectation from it?
I expect to have a new tooth in place of my current gap. I hope the new tooth will match my other teeth and look as real as possible. I would also hope that having a tooth in place would improve my overall bite and help to prevent any future problems with not having a tooth. such as gum disease.
Aesthetically I am hoping to look better and feel more confident!
What’s involved?
An implant requires surgical placement into the jawbone normally under local anaesthetic sometimes with sedation provided.
The implant needs time to fuse to the bone and in many cases it needs to be buried under the gum before exposing it and connecting to the tooth. In some cases a tooth or teeth can be connected the same day as inserting it where bone density is favourable. The fusing process between the implant and bone is termed Osseintegration.
Who’s doing the work?
Dr. Malcolm Schaller – The Harley Street Oral Reconstruction Centre. Incorporating Nobel Biocare’s implant teeth-in-an-hour range
Name Lucy
Age 25
From Sussex
Why did you decide to have this procedure?
I had a sporting accident when I was younger in a P.E. lesson which damaged my tooth. It then crumbled later on in that year and caused me a lot of pain and discomfort. Eventually I went to see my dentist who felt it was necessary to remove the remainder of the tooth. I was not offered any after treatemtment or a bridge.
Consequently, I became more concerned about the long-term affect on not having a tooth, such as gum disease. For personal reasons, I always wanted to have a tooth in place. I have also had some nuisance problems with eating such as food getting stuck in the gap and sometimes I tend to chew to one side as it’s more sensitive on this side. I also suffer from TMJ and had seeked advice from an Osteopath who felt it would imptover my condition.
Did you have any reservations?
I had some reservations, as I was very nervous about having an implant screwed into my jawbone. I was worried that it would need replacing or could perhaps further damage the problem. I was also worried that it would not match the rest of my teeth and look unrealistic.
How did you choose a surgery/practitioner?
My friend was a former patient of Dr. Malcolm Schaller and highly recommended me to the clinic.
Did they answer all of your concerns satisfactorily?
Most definitely, Dr. Malcolm Schaller spent lots of time with me explaining the procedure and was always available to answer my concerns.
What kind of counselling, if any, did you have? None
How much did it cost?
Price on application. Expect to pay £3500- £4500 depnding on whether IV seadtion is given and how many teeth.
Did you just go with one quote?
Yes as I wanted to use the best surgeon considering it was a life long decision.
Did you use finance? No
What happened as you remember it?
I had a consultation with the nurse who explained that I wouild need to take anti-biotics for the next week. Also I was advised not to eat any fresh diary products for the following week as it helps prevent infection. I was then met by the anaesthetist who explained that he would be giving me some pain killers to take home. He then went into detail about IV Sedation and asked me if I had any questions.
I spoke in depth to the anaestheist about my concerns, as I was pretty nervous about being sedated, as I had not done this before. He instantly put me at ease and answered all my questions and explained that I would be well looked after. I felt less nervous after speaking to him.
Following this, I was gowned up and went into the theatre. The nurse then placed some tubes on my arm, which I think were connected to the oxygen monitor. I was then given an injection and was asked how I was feeling. I remember saying to the anaesthetist that I felt sleepy. I also remember feeling totally at ease and not at all frightened. The next thing I remember is again the anaesthetist asking if I was ok and again I replied ‘Yes fine’.
Next thing I remember is being in the recovering room where my boyfriend came by and said he was going to get the car.
I do not remember any pain or having the procedure in a sense. The whole event seemed like 10 minutes!
How long did it take?
I am told it was 1.5 hours.
How did it feel? Did it hurt?
I felt absolutely no pain whatsoever- I just felt normal.
How did you feel afterwards?
I felt very sleepy. The pain increased after a day as the local anesthetic had worn off. My mouth felt a little soar and bruised and I did feel like I had a toothache.
What were your initial thoughts after the op?
‘Wow! That was easy!’
How long was your recovery?
I spent two days after the op resting. The toothache feeling lasted for about a week.
Were you happy with the outcome?
I feel the implant itself is incredibly neat. I have a follow up appointment this Friday (a week and two days after the surgery). Where I will find out more about my treatment plan and when I will have the Nobel Biocare crown fitted. My crown is currently being made in a lab at Cosmetica Dental Studios. I am told it needs to be done in stages in order to ensure there is no infection.
